Costa Rica Currency Exchange

Costa Rica currency is called the colon or colon-ees (plural). Most tourist areas like Jaco Beach, Tamarindo, Flamingo, Dominical, Montezuma and Manuel Antonio in Costa Rica and hotels accept US dollars and most Costa Rica Real Estate transactions are listings shown in US Dollars.

If you are purchasing goods and services in Costa Rica other than real estate, it is important to know how to calculate the exchange. The exchange rate will be approximately 500 colones to $1 (varies slightly). Bring new, crisp $20 bills as many places will not accept nor have change for large bills and waiting in line at banks in Costa Rica is not a pleasant way to spend your vacation. Traveler’s checks can be cashed at the banks, but are costly and take a lot of time.

Ken's Quick currency converter: for the mathematically challenged. Simply cover up the last three digits (zeros) and multiply by 2. It isn't precise down to the penny, but it will certainly get you in the ballpark to make sure you aren't over paying. For the 1,000 colones (co-lone-eez) above, cover the three zeros and double it. 1 x 2 = 2 so 1000 colones is $2.
