Popular Costa Rica Beaches

Playa Jaco - Closest complete beach town to San Jose in the Central Valley. Jaco Beach is approximately 3 miles long, is wrapped by mountains and lush, tropical rain forest. Jaco Beach is popular for surfing. At low tide, Jaco is about 100 yards wide, flat and excellent to walk, jog or ride a bike. Jaco Beach is a swimming beach - especially at the south end.

Playa Hermosa / Jaco - The best beach in Costa Rica for consistently large, surfable waves. Playa Hermosa is a natural beach with black, volcanic sand. This is a long, beach and excellent for long walks and jogging.

Playa Herradura - Herradura or Horse Shoe Bay is the beach where Los Suenos Resort and Marina is located. This is a very swimmable beach and popular among locals. The Marriott Hotel has a private, white sand beach within its property limits for hotel and resort guests.

Dominical - Located about 30 minutes south of Quepos on the Pacific Cost, Dominical is a popular beach for surfers. This is a very natural beach, long and wide. The town of Dominical borders the beach and is an unpaved road with shops and restaurants.

Uvita - A series of beaches about 10 minutes south of Dominical, Uvita is accessible via the Coastal Highway (Costanera). Uvita has a city complete with services.

Tamarindo - a light colored sandy beach in Guanacaste, Costa Rica's Northwestern Province. Tamarindo is the most popular beach town for American tourists in Guanacaste. This upscale beach town has a nice vibe to it, shopping and nightlife. The surf is also popular with many tourist venues. Tamarindo is located about 45 minutes West of Liberia Airport.

Montezuma - This hippie town has a beautiful beach and is located on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula.

Mal Pais - The road is rough to get there, but when the conditions are right, this is a good surfing beach. Located about 10 minutes south of Santa Theresa and 25 minutes West of Montezuma.

Santa Theresa - Just north of Mal Pais, another natural and popular beach on the Nicoya Peninsula.

Esterillos - Located 20 minutes south of Jaco, Esterillos is a light colored sandy beach with good surf. It is slowly developing and has attracted Americans, Canadians and Costa Ricans. A golf course resort, Cabo Caletas is being developed on the North side of Esterillos. Also popular at Esterillos Oeste (West) is Punta Mala, a large nature reserve carved out from volcanic lava flows and consists of tide pools at low tide and mostly submerged under water at high tide. Side note. This is a good place for catching lobsters.

Bejuco - Located 30 minutes south of Jaco, Bejuco is another one of Costa Rica's long and natural beaches. Good surf, popular beach for locals. Parrita is located about 10 minutes south of Bejuco. Take caution if you are going to swim in Bejuco as there is a very strong rip tide. Swim in very shallow water, bring a surf board or stay out of the water.

Puerto Viejo - This popular beach is located on the Caribbean Coast, about 30 minutes south of Limon. Puerto Viejo and the series of beaches that are adjacent to it are popular among Europeans, Americans and Canadians. The culture at Puerto Viejo Beach is that of Caribbean, Jamaican decent.
