Playa Jaco - a laidback bustling town of about 7,000 people, Jaco is one of the most popular beaches in Costa Rica and Central America. Located in the North of the Puntarenas province along the country’s central Pacific Coast less than 2 hours from San Jose (and soon to be less than an hour when a new highway is complete), Jaco has the reputation of being a ‘party beach’ with an excellent nightlife. That, however is ever changing as the fun and relaxed atmosphere along with the areas great infrastructure, variety of restaurants, numerous tourist activites, natural rainforest and mountains surrounding the area and the friendly people here are attracting a middle and upper level tourist from North America, Europe and San Jose, Costa Rica alike. The area caters to a healthy number of tourists who want to enjoy a more tranquil lifestyle, Jaco has a nice clean beach that is popular year around. The area boasts Los Suenos Resort and Marina (Marriott Hotel), a 5 Star Wyndham Residences (under construction), Ramada, Best Western and 4 Star Daystar Properties (luxury oceanfront condominiums). Also up and coming is Hermosa Hills Development and Biological Reserve for those wanting mountain tranquility, big ocean views, cool ocean breezes and a proximity to beach, golf, sport fishing, restaurant variety and other nearby services.
In Jaco you will find accommodations to suit every budget, as well as good food, plenty of restaurants and a number of local sodas and stores. There are also plenty of tour operators in town that arrange everything from horseback rides, to some excellent off shore sport fishing, surf schools, zip line canopy tours, sea kayaking, hiking, biking and exotic nature viewing.
One of this town’s major attractions is the fantastic surfing here as the waves are consistently big and the breaks are very good. A yearly international surf contest is also held in the nearby Playa Hermosa that attracts a huge number of surfers from all over the globe to this beach.
Easily accessible by all, Playa Jaco is about 3 km long and is best reached by catching an International fight to San Jose and then driving out or taking a shuttle. The areas surrounding Jaco are some of the most picturesque and cleanest, with stunningly gorgeous panoramic ocean views. The area is considered transitional forest with a balance of rain and sunny weather, keeping it green year around without interfering with sunning on the beach or taking one of the areas many tours.
